Chris Archer got off to a rocky start for Tampa Bay

Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez launched his 15th home run in the third inning, and Chase Headley collected three hits to help mount New York’s comeback.

Chris Archer got off to a rocky start for Tampa Bay (53-50), but the All-Star ace rebounded to strikeout 10 batters in six innings.

This four-game series against American League East rivals is littered with playoff implications — both as potential division winners, and as wildcard hopefuls. This loss won’t immediately dim the Rays’ chances to return to the postseason, but three more would certainly sting.

Nationals trio Bryce Harper, Ryan Zimmerman and Max Scherzer led Washington to a 15-2 win against the Brewers. Harper went 3 for 5 with three runs scored, two home runs (27) and four RBIs (79) to raise his average to .338. Zimmerman launched two home runs of his own, while driving in three runs. Meanwhile, Scherzer allowed just one earned run in six innings with nine strikeouts to improve to 12-5 with a 2.23 ERA this season.

This list doesn’t include the successes of National Association or American Association baseball teams — only squads that would eventually join the American League or the National League later on.

The Chicago White Stockings topped out at 37-4-1 (.902) during the 1880 campaign. They would finish 67-17-2, winning the National League pennant with a .798 winning percentage — good for 129 victories when prorated over an 162-game schedule.

They would go on to have the greatest 42 game stretch in history in 1906, when Chicago’s National League club — currently known as the Cubs — went 39-3 from Aug. 3 to Sept. 16. The 1906 Cubs would capture the pennant with a 116-36 record, but lost the World Series to the White Sox, four games to two.
